LIMB's laboratory of historical, political, and cultural content will also allow the students to explore the history of Francophone cinema itself, as well as the history of French/Francophone involvement in Canada. The purpose of the course will be to allow students to examine the tensions that have emerged around the concept of the Francophone identity in the past two decades, in an attempt to determine what Francophone films are, and to what degree they are allowed to be made in North America. In this context, the course will examine the following:
The history of French language and culture in Quebec, their complexities, the struggles of both what it means to be French and Quebequois and the collective memories of both groupings is a rich field of inquiry. The course includes weekly excursions to the Museums downtown Toronto. Each student will attend three films per week and participate in active discourse with two other students and the professor.
The seminar will be led by a team of highly experienced teachers and researchers in the field of Francophone cinema and film studies, including academics at the Université de Montréal, the École de la Nouvelle Cinémathèque and the Université de Rouen, as well as film directors and critics. Through film screenings in French and the English media together with video and audiovisual production classes, the seminar will also seek to equip students with the basic skills required to develop their own Francophone cinema projects. The seminar will conclude with an informal screening of some of the most recent Franco-Canadian films and a poster exhibition. At the end of the seminar, students will be expected to submit a research paper on a topic that can be developed from the seminar, including a bibliographical list of sources.
