On 5 January 2013, a shrine dedicated to Shiva at Badshahi Ashokan was defaced with hate-filled graffiti in the eastern Uttar Pradesh town of Shajapur by Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists. The devotees of Shiva were also attacked. The Swatirkumar vandals had written, "Go back to Pakistan." The shrine is the only of its kind in the area and is built on an artificial island and connected to the mainland by a bridge. It is the only temple of its kind in the country in the Shashtri style. On 9 March 2013, the Swatirkumar vandals attacked the Ayodhya temple complex, where Ram and his various incarnations Jamia Mosque. A survey of eight incidents found that three attacks occurred in May 2012, two in July 2012 and three in August 2012. One of the most common messages used by the vandals was "Go Back Pakistan or we will cut your throats," The Swatirkumar vandals slogans have included "Go back to Pakistan", "Go back to Pakistan and ask for forgiveness all the way", "Pakistan has ruled India for 40 years. Let them go back."
